9-15-2023 Session Notes

For once, the summary is going to be fairly short. For various reasons, this session was a herculean battle between me trying to get through a fairly light load of prepped material, and the repeated disintegration of the group into side conversations and bits.

We started off with the lead up to the masquerade ball. Salt started things off by finding a man named Count Raymond with a cool cape and very overwhelming perfume, and asking him for it. After briefly threatening to rob the man, Salt was directed to a tailor who took 1,000 gold, and within the day was able to produce a magnificent cape which not only gave Salt a bonus to his charisma, but also had the ability to billow dramatically on command.

With varying degrees of willingness, Lucifer, Laura, and Inej all got fancy dresses from the Queen's Closet courtesy of the head maid. Lucifer was given an all black, very goth outfit, Laura a very plain and simple dress (and a bird mask), and Inej was given what the maid called "the slut dress" when she revealed that she needed to impress Sir Raoul "The Heartbreaker".

At the masquerade ball, several things happened. Bellothe Chance joined the party and explained Duke Ormond's whole deal. Essentially, he's a liberal noble who admires many of Beggar's Hole's institutions, and believes that the institution of a powerful Adventurer's Guild in Ciloria would be a good counter to the power of the monarchy. Salt strutted in front of Count Raymond, really pissing off the Count with how cool and expensive his cape is.

A woman in a red dress, which the head maid had told everyone was out of fashion because of the color's association with the bread rioters, gave Laura a note saying to meet her in the bathroom. Once there, Laura was dragged into a closet where the woman, named Sabina, explained that she was part of a group that admired the methods that Laura and the ETA were willing to use in pursuit of their goals. She promised she would be in combat, then told Laura to go back to the party.

Finally, Inej found and talked to Raoul. On the way, she saw two men in the corner, each wearing rings with a skull and crown on them. She tried to go talk to them, and noticed that they were heavily perfumed, but was rebuffed and had guards called when she kept trying to get the men's names. Nevertheless, she found Raoul, was flirty, and he revealed that Beggar's Hole was going to be matched up against Ciloria in the next day's melee.

With that, the event came to a close, and the party prepared for the next day's melee.

To summarize the melee: all of my monsters got whomped super quickly. They were still kind of funny as an anti-party, but in all honesty this is when the crosstalk and distractions got to their worst, so the details of the fight beyond my guys failing entirely to win are rather hazy. One important aspect, however, was Raoul offering to miss Inej on purpose if she would agree to a date, which she did. Also important, the party was able to swing the crowd from rabid hatred of Beggar's Hole and its champions, to a much more neutral position via their performance.

And that was the end of the first day of the tournament. The party came away with a point in Beggar's Hole's column, and the next day's individual events to look forward to.
